Remonter

A tile is a combination of various attribute. The graphics will change accordingly.

Geographical attributes

These attributes are the attributes of the tiles at the beginning of the game, before human occupation. They may change later due to some disaster (global warming, major forest fire...), or terraforming.

Type of terrain (or climate)

The type of terrain can be Desert, Plain, Tundra, Grassland, Ocean, Coast or Sea. It determines the background color of the tile.

Relief

A tile can be Plain, Hill, Mountain, High Mountain or Volcano. It has an effect on the resources available, combat bonuses, or movement cost.

Vegetation

Vegetation can be Jungle, Forest, Pine forest, None.

Rivers

Rivers exist between two tile. Two kinds of river exist : minor rivers or major rivers.

Combining attributes

The final characteristics of a tile are combination of attributes. It can be for instance a Desert Hill, of a Jungle Plateau.

Not that some combination are not possible: in Desert, no vegetation is possible, in Tundra you can have only Forest or no vegetation, in High Mountain no vegetation is possible; etc.

The combination determines the output of the tile (food, resources), the movement cost and combat bonuses.

Improvements

The above attributed are used without modification as long as a tile remains unpopulated. When the tile is populated, an overlay of human activity is added to the tile.

Agricultural lands (or farming)

When a tile is populated by more agricultural people than urban people, an irrigation symbols is displayed on the map. Several irrigation levels are available, depending on the technological level of the civilization.

Industrial lands (or mine)

Then the urban / industrial population is larger than the agricultural population, a mining / industrial symbol is displayed on the map. Several industrial levels are available, depending on the technological level of the civilization.

Transportation (or raods)

Several levels of transportation can be build to link two or more tiles.

Villages and cities

When the population of a tile reaches a limit, the tile becomes a village, and later a city.
