How to Create a Map
Civilization 3 maps consist of three separate layers: terrain, which defines the underlying geographical structures on a map, resources, which define the harvestable resources on a map, and overlays, which determine things like player start locations, goody huts, barbarian camps, rivers, and so on.

By default, when you start Civ3Edit, you start with a blank, standard (100 x 100) ocean map, and the 1x1 desert terrain brush is selected.

To create a map, simply select a brush type by going to the map menu and selecting "select brush type", then selecting either terrain, resource, or overlay. You can also select the terrain, resource, or overlay icons on the toolbar.

If your current brush is a terrain brush, you can also change your brush size (1x1, 3x3, 5x5, or 7x7) by going to the map menu and selecting "Terrain Brush Size", then selecting a brush size.

You can generate a new random map by going to the map menu and selecting "Generate Map ". You will be presented with a pop-up that will allow you to change the various attributes of a map, and the map editor will then generate a new, random map for you. Note that if you want to generate a random map in a nonstandard world size, you will need to edit the default rules and change the world sizes.

Finally, you may choose to generate a new, blank map. You can do this by going to the map menu and selecting "Clear Map". You will be presented with a pop-up that allows you to select the base terrain of the new map, as well as which world size you would like for your new map. Note that if you want to generate a blank map in a nonstandard world size, you will need to
edit the default rules and change the world sizes.
