2.Background story
At the end of the 21st century the ocean ground is a region full of acticity. Here are still resources, food and space enough for everyone, but especially the Pacific region is more and more controlled by giant multinational corporations which maintain huge bases underseas, with enormous abilities in the fields of research and production. But this economic success has also its dark sides, some of the companies have a strong influence of the politics of Pacific states, and try to avoid international control of their activities. Some smaller states depend already from food and resource delivery from these companies. As an result these companies were granted with special privileges, including the permission to recruit own armed security forces. During the last years the ongoing ecenomic exploitation of the seas has lead to serious ecologic problems. All attempts to introduce effective protection failed due to the refusals of some companies which refer to their privileges. In the last months this conflict has escalated dramatically, international control teams were frequently harrassed by company owned security forces, and some contractual granted food and resource delivery were restrained to set Pacific states under pressure. Furthermore private media networks owned by deep sea companies started big PR campaigns to discredit international efforts to protect the seas. Therefore the SubForce member states have decided to enforce international sea law in the Pacific by military forces. Mission Description: -------------------------------------------------------------------- Commander, the situation in the Pacific region becomes ever more grave! Especially Australia and New Zealand are continuesly hit by earthquakes and tsunamies. Scientists suspect a connection with the continued explotation of the deep sea by internationally operating companies which refuse to accept any kind of respondsibility reffering to their licenses to exploit the deep sea resources. SubForce patrol missions in this theater have been frequently harrassed by private security forces of deep sea companies, leaving the Pacific region without any effective international monitoring. These actions have been justified as a "necessary anti-terrorist policy". Sir, your Task Force has received permission to enforce control if needed and to nullify company deep sea licenses in case of illegal activities until further notice. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Note: The NavStar II reconnaissance satellite which normally monitors naval activities in the region is malfunctioned since two days, therefore are currently no exact surveillance data of this area available. The surveillance system can be reestablished as soon as a new satellite has been started. |
